Three of our local tower controllers stopped by the ATL pilot lounge recently for a lunchtime Q&A. Jointly arranged by ALPA, the ATL CPO and NATCA, the controllers answered questions and gained perspective from the pilot’s point of view.
We hope to continue to have controllers visit occasionally, and they likewise recommitted to having pilot tours visit the tower in coming months. All sides agree that gaining a better understanding of the each other’s work environment, capabilities and limitations, helps to foster an efficient and cooperative operation.
Have a question or concern? The controllers suggested you contact them directly. Their number can be obtained from the CPO or on a low-workload frequency (this blog being public, we don’t want to potentially subject the tower folks to nuisance calls). Respectful inquiries can help refine understanding of procedures or help ATC become aware of pilot concerns.
